Get the facts about asbestos and mesothelioma

What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining that protects your organs—the pleura around the lungs and the peritoneum in the abdomen. It develops when asbestos fibers irritate that lining over many years, causing scarring and cellular damage. The primary risk factor is asbestos exposure. That’s true whether the exposure was on the job, at home from contaminated work clothes, or from do-it-yourself renovations with older materials.

This disease is slow to develop. It can take 20–50 years after exposure for symptoms to appear. That delay makes it harder to pinpoint where you were exposed, but it does not make your claim impossible—an experienced mesothelioma attorney can help in determining the source of your asbestos exposure.

How Asbestos Causes Harm

When asbestos-containing materials are cut, sanded, or disturbed, microscopic fibers are released which can then be inhaled or swallowed. These deadly fibers become lodged in the body, causing scarring and cellular damage that can lead to lung cancer and the very serious disease of Mesothelioma. For years, companies have known of the risks of asbestos exposure but nonetheless exposed their workers to this deadly material.

A mesothelioma diagnosis changes a person’s life, as well as the lives of their family. For those who have been diagnosed, there can be countless difficult personal, financial and medical decisions that must be made, and you may be struggling to make sense of what happens next.

If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer, you must act quickly. There are applicable statutes of limitation that dictate how long you may have to file a claim. By waiting too long, you may be prohibited from recovering compensation and holding those responsible for your disease accountable.

Why Choose The Lampin Law Firm?

What is Asbestos and How Does it Cause Cancer?

Asbestos is a highly toxic fiber that was used in thousands of products until the 1980s, which has been classified as a known human carcinogen. Exposure to asbestos fibers has been proven to cause deadly diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

When products containing asbestos are cut, drilled, sanded, or disturbed in any way, tiny asbestos fibers are released into the air. When a person inhales or ingests these microscopic fibers, they may become permanently trapped in the lungs.

Over time, these fibers can cause scarring and inflammation in the lungs which can lead to nearby cells to develop malignancies. These tumors can cause mesothelioma and lung cancer.

What makes asbestos so deadly is that the lung cancer and mesothelioma it causes take a long time to develop, but only months to spread and metastasize. Many people who develop asbestos related cancer were exposed to asbestos in the workplace and had no idea.

Why was it used?

A Short History of Asbestos

Asbestos was first introduced to the U.S. in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It became widely used due its durable, heat-resistant properties and its ability to strengthen building materials such as cement and various plastics. This made asbestos a practical choice for insulation, roofing, fireproofing, and sound absorption.

While asbestos was used in a variety of applications, workers in certain industries are more likely to have been exposed. For example, the shipbuilding industry utilized asbestos to insulate their boilers, steam pipes, and hot water tanks. The automotive industry widely used asbestos in manufacturing brake shoes, clutch pads, and a variety of other parts.

Asbestos was used in thousands of products until the 1980s and because of its wide usage many people have been exposed to the dangerous fiber. While no amount of asbestos exposure can be considered safe, those who were exposed to large amounts of asbestos, or those who were exposed regularly over a long period of time are considered to be at a greater risk for developing serious health problems. Exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did asbestos start to be used?

Asbestos has been used since 4000 B.C. but industrial use started in the 1880s during the Industrial Revolution. By the 1970s awareness of health risks led to strict regulations.

Exposure occurs when asbestos fibers from disturbed materials are inhaled or ingested. This happens most during demolition, renovation, or handling of asbestos containing products.

Construction, shipbuilding and manufacturing workers are most at risk. People living in older homes or near industrial sites with asbestos contamination are also vulnerable.

Symptoms take decades to appear but may include shortness of breath, persistent coughing, chest pain or abdominal swelling. If you experience these symptoms and suspect asbestos exposure get medical evaluation.

Tell your doctor about any known exposure and get regular screenings for asbestos related conditions. Early detection is critical.
